Meet: Kelvin, Kimberly, and Karson of Globetrotterkin

Travel doesn’t have to be your job to have a central place in your life.

Kelvin and Kimberly, the parents behind @globetrotterkin, say they are proof of that. He is a lawyer, she is a corporate consultant.

“We both work mundane jobs, so we opt to adventure with our son, Karson, whenever possible,” Kimberly says.

The Hong Kong-based family has explored the world part-time, taking a very practical approach to travel. They shared their must-have camera, the surprising destination with the best gelato, and a small way to be a more eco-friendly traveler.

In three words, our travel style is…

Mindful, adventurous and well-planned.

Kelvin and I have been avid travelers ever since…

We went on our university graduation trip together to Taipei, Taiwan. From then on, we have never stopped travelling. The feeling of exploring new places and experiencing new cultures gives us adrenaline rushes.

The first trip we took as a family was…

When Karson was a year and 3 months old. We took a long haul flight back to Vancouver to visit our relatives.

Our must-have travel gear is…

Our reliable Canon DSLR and tripod! We take loads of pictures so that we can relive our memories through browsing them.

We would love it if travelers would…

Be more eco-friendly. For instance, bring our own toothbrush and everyday amenities to reduce the waste caused by using disposable hotel toiletries.

The most important lesson our child has learned from traveling is…

To appreciate the cultural differences and embrace every opportunity to adventure.

We especially love…

Exotic destinations, as we enjoy water sports and marine life.

Some of the hidden gems we’ve found in our travels are…

The gelato on Hvar in Croatia is super delicious. Meanwhile, you must try row boating in Lake Bled, in Slovenia. Also, there is a fairy tale view overlooking Hohenzollern Castle in Zellerhorn, in Germany’s Black Forest.

The hardest thing about traveling with children is…

Food. I remember when we were in Croatia, Karson wanted to eat steamed fish really badly, so we ended up at a restaurant having grilled fish in the afternoon. Nonetheless, travelling has definitely trained our agility. We have all learnt to adapt to different cultural experiences—including what we eat.

We decide where to travel…

Depending on the season, weather, distance and duration. A lot is taken into account. We have a list of places we want to go to, but we have not been to yet, due to the four criteria.

The destinations on our bucket list are…

Dubai, Jordan, Oman, Georgia, Turkey, Africa, Bali, etc. The list is endless. We want to explore every part of this world.

We pack according to…

Weather, duration and purpose.

Our favorite travel app is…

Google Maps, as we have the tendency to drive wherever we go.
